Athens Theme Countdown Timer: How to Shrink Height & Customize Heading Color on Shopify
Hey there, fellow store owners! As someone who spends a lot of time sifting through the Shopify community forums, I often come across those little design challenges that can feel like huge roadblocks. You know, the ones where the theme editor just won't quite let you do what you envision? Well, I recently saw a fantastic discussion involving a store owner, offroadjim, and some helpful community experts, Moeed and Ploqo, tackling exactly this kind of issue with the Athens theme's countdown timer.
offroadjim was trying to get their countdown timer to be super thin – essentially a sleek strip – but the Athens theme's built-in slider only went down to 200 pixels. Even after diving into the countdown-timer.liquid file and changing the value to 100, the visual height wouldn't budge. It's a classic example of a theme having a minimum height built into its CSS that the editor can't easily override. This is a common hurdle, and it's where a little custom CSS comes to the rescue!
The Countdown Timer Conundrum: Too Tall!
offroadjim’s problem was clear: the default countdown timer in their Athens theme was just too chunky for their liking. They wanted it to be a minimal strip, like this:

But it stubbornly remained much taller, even after tweaking the settings:

Two Ways to Shrink That Timer
The community quickly jumped in with solutions, and it's great to see a couple of different (but equally effective) approaches emerge. Both involve adding a bit of custom CSS, but in slightly different places. Remember, before you make any code edits, it's always smart to duplicate your theme first! That way, you've got a safe backup.
Method 1: Adding CSS to your theme.liquid file (Moeed's Approach)
Moeed's solution targets the padding of the countdown content directly and applies it globally. This is a powerful way to override theme defaults.
Here's how to implement it:
- Go to your Shopify Admin, navigate to Online Store > Themes.
- Find your current theme (Athens, in this case), click Actions > Edit Code.
- In the 'Layout' directory, locate the
theme.liquidfile and click on it. - Scroll all the way to the bottom of the file, just above the closing
